The Keystone Cops contributed to the field of visual communications by creating a culture of film followers who truly enjoyed their slap stick comical style. Faced with the challenges of silent film the Keystones Cops overcame many hurdles the early film industry struggled with. Through creativity and passion for the art they were creating the Keystone cops created a legacy that lives on today.

The lack of sound played a major role in shaping the way early actors conveyed emotion. As the images in the photo gallery demonstrate the use of over exaggerated and bold facial expressions helped to bridge the gap between the audience and the world the actors were attempting to create. The human mind has an incredible capacity to read and understand emotion through facial expressions. These early silent film stars used this capacity and their skills to convey emotion through film.

The Keystone Cops represented a cultural perspective of authority present in the United States nearing the beginning of World War I. The Keystone Cops moving at a fast pace and without coordination would bump and bang their way through pursuits creating more havoc than they cured. This type of comedy served as a relief for many film goers and acts a historical marker for us today.
